John Challis (born 16th August 1942 in Clifton, Bristol; died 19th September 2021 in Herefordshire) appeared on Coronation Street in two roles: firstly rowdy football supporter George Naylor in November and December 1967; and he returned to the programme as Det Con (later Det Sgt) Norman Phillips, making intermittent appearances between October 1974 and February 1977.

He was educated at Ottershaw School, a state boarding facility in Surrey. He was first employed as a trainee estate agent and delivered groceries before entering the acting profession through a travelling children's theatre.

Best known for his role as shifty used car salesman Aubrey "Boycie" Boyce in classic BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses and its spin-off The Green Green Grass, his other credits include The Newcomers, Z Cars, Softly Softly, Crossroads, Doctor Who, Beau Geste, Howards' Way, Wish Me Luck, Doctors and Benidorm.

On stage, he appeared in Hamlet, Henry IV, Twelfth Night, Henry V and The Revenger's Tragedy for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Other works include Dirty Linen, Rattle of a Simple Man, On the Razzle, The Rivals, The Relapse, Dangerous Obsession, Jack's Out and The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, along with a production of Dogg's Hamlet & Cahoot's Macbeth on Broadway.

John was married four times and two of his former wives, Debbie Arnold and Sabina Franklyn, have also appeared on Coronation Street.
