John McKelvey (born 30th November 1916 in Manchester, died 27th April 1998 in Melbourne, Australia) appeared in Coronation Street in August 1968 as housing officer Clifford Sykes.

His career in television dated back to the 1940s and included roles in many series such as Emergency-Ward 10, Cluff, Armchair Theatre, Dr. Finlay's Casebook, Softly Softly, Man at the Top, Z Cars, The Liver Birds, The Life of Riley, Open All Hours, Crown Court and The Cuckoo Waltz but he is best remembered for his regular role as the villainous Sefton Briggs in the popular Granada Television series A Family At War from 1970 to 1972, created by John Finch.

Theatre roles include parts in Inherit the Wind, A Long Day's Journey into Night, The Possessed and The Matchmaker. For a period in 1979, he worked for The Fortune Theatre in New Zealand.
