John Christopher Nightingale (born 23rd December 1942 in Burnley, died 31st March 1980 in Greenwich, London) appeared on Coronation Street in September 1972 as Det Sgt Simms, who worked on the investigation into the missing infant Jason Lomax.

His other credits included roles in Journey to the Unknown, Colditz Dixon of Dock Green, Fall of Eagles, Village Hall, The Stars Look Down, Crown Court, a regular role in When the Boat Comes In alongside Susan Jameson and Pickersgill People.

On radio, he was heard in productions of Afternoon Theatre and Midweek Theatre.

On stage, he appeared in the National Youth Theatre production of Antony and Cleopatra at the Old Vic Theatre in London. Other works include Saint Joan, Rosencrantz and Guilderstern are Dead, As You Like It, Oedipus, Edward II, The Covent Garden Tragedy, Love's Labour's Lost, Back to Methuselah, MacRune's Guevara, Henry IV, Close the Coalhouse Door, Waiting for Godot, The Alchemist and Anchorman.

He succumbed to cancer, aged 37.
