John Southworth (8th November 1929 - 22nd August 2004) appeared on Coronation Street in May 1997 as Mr Conway, an OAP who suffered a near-fatal heart attack in the Rovers upon learning he'd won a trip to Las Vegas in the raffle that had been organised by Alec Gilroy.

Born in Liverpool, he trained under Michel St-Denis at the Old Vic Theatre School and has been credited for many acting roles both on stage and screen since the early 1950s.

The Director of Ipswich Arts Theatre for eight years, he returned to freelance acting and research on early English theatre and also wrote The English Medieval Minstrel (1989), Fools and Jesters at the English Court (1998) and Shakespeare the Player: a life in the theatre (2003).

His other TV and film credits include roles in The Black Arrow, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Othello, The Sky Larks, Henry IV, The Old Curiosity Shop, Z Cars, Moonstrike, Danger Man, The Mallens, Little Lord Fauntleroy, Angels, Screenplay, The Famous Five and Witness Against Hitler.
