John Thomson was born on 2nd April 1969 in Salford and following a two-episode stint in Coronation Street as biker Gary in October 1990, he returned to the programme as children's entertainer Jesse Chadwick between December 2008 and March 2010.

He attended All Hallows Catholic High School near Preston, leaving with three O-levels. He then attended Runshaw College between 1985 and 1987, studying for four A-levels, including theatre studies. Following this, he turned down a scholarship in America to study drama at Manchester Polytechnic.

His appearances in several recurring roles in television series included: Ken in Men Behaving Badly, Eddie Ryan in Playing the Field, Pete Gifford in Cold Feet, Charlie Darling in New Street Law and Nigel Pearson in Kingdom.

He further played H.V. "Harry" Kershaw in the 2010 fiftieth anniversary drama The Road to Coronation Street.
