Katy Jane Harris (previously Nelson) was the teenage daughter of Tommy and Angela Harris and the older sister of Craig Harris.

Originally from Sheffield, the Harrises were rehoused in Weatherfield and given the new name of "Nelson" as part of the witness protection programme. After five months, Katy blew their cover by contacting some of her old friends in Sheffield, allowing gangsters Andy and Nick Morgan to track them down. After a stand-off at No.6 with Katy as a hostage, the brothers were arrested by the police. The family then continued to live in Coronation Street under their true identities.

In 2003, Katy discovered she was diabetic. Helping her was Martin Platt, a neighbour and nurse with whom she developed a romantic relationship, despite Martin being nearly 20 years her senior. Enduring the disapproval of both their families, they remained together until 2005, when Martin finished with Katy for aborting their child over a false rumour that he was having an affair with Sally Webster. When Tommy gloated over what had happened, Katy became so enraged that she hit him over the head with a wrench, killing him. To protect her daughter, Angela took the blame but Katy, unable to live with the guilt of what she'd done, wrote a confession letter and ended her own life.

Katy with her family

Katy Harris was born in Sheffield on 26th September 1986, to Tommy and Angela Harris. Katy and her family moved into 6 Coronation Street in November 2002. The family had been placed under a witness protection program under the surname of "Nelson", as Angela was due to testify in a gangland murder trial.

Killer Katy

2005: Katy kills her father Tommy

In 2003, Katy discovered she was diabetic, and nurse Martin Platt helped her get used to giving herself daily injections of insulin. The two developed a romantic relationship, even though Martin was almost 20 years older than Katy and nearly as old as her father. Katy became pregnant, but her scheming father, Tommy, persuaded her to have an abortion by fabricating a story that Martin was having an affair. Tommy hated Martin for sleeping with Katy, branding him a 'pervert.' Enduring the disapproval of both their families, they remained together until 2005, when Martin finished with Katy for aborting their child over a false rumour that he was having an affair with Sally Webster. When Tommy gloated over what had happened, Katy became so enraged that she hit him over the head with a wrench, killing him.

Katy's mother Angela witnessed the murder but persuaded her not to call the police. They then went through a pretence that Tommy had been killed by an intruder, until forensic evidence led to Angela's arrest. After a few weeks, Katy could live with the guilt no longer and wrote a note telling the truth about her father's death before committing suicide by drinking water mixed with sugar (a deadly solution, because of her diabetes). Martin later found her lying unconscious on the sofa with the note right beside her. She was taken to Weatherfield General but died a week after her arrival.

Following Katy's death, Angela was cleared of manslaughter but faced new charges of assisting an offender and conspiring to pervert the course of justice, which meant that she remained in prison.
