Maggie Jones (21st June 1934 - 2nd December 2009) was a British actress who played battleaxe Blanche Hunt, the mother of Deirdre Barlow, on Coronation Street, a role she first played from 1974 to 1976, with guest appearances in 1977, 1978, 1981, 1996, 1997 and 1998 before she once again became a permanent cast member from 1999 until 2009. Maggie took over the role of Blanche from Patricia Cutts, who had committed suicide after appearing in only two episodes in 1974.

Maggie first appeared on Coronation Street in two small roles: as a Policewoman in July 1961 and she returned in December 1967 as a shoplifter called Maggie Monks. Her other credits include Nearest and Dearest, Dalziel and Pascoe, Heartbeat and Peak Practice, and she won British Soap Awards for Best Comedy Performance in 2005 and 2008.

The RADA trained actress became ill in October 2009, and although it was reported she was 'on the road to recovery' after surgery, sadly she did not recover fully. She was a much loved member of the cast with Michael Le Vell, William Tarmey, Alison King, Gray O'Brien and David Neilson amongst those who spoke fondly of her during her illness.
