The Man drank alone at the Rovers Return on 13th May 1964. He was harrangued by a tetchy Martha Longhurst for sitting in her seat in the snug but stood his ground until he'd finished his drink, by which time all regular drinkers were asked to leave anyway as Frank Barlow had hired the Rovers for a private bash with friends. As he got up, the nervous man asked Martha, "would you jump in me grave as quick?". A short time later, Martha had a heart attack and died while seated in the chair.
