Matthew Dowley was the manager of the Weatherfield branch of Fastbank, the bank used by Roy and Hayley Cropper. Ray had been deceived by Tracy Barlow into thinking that he was the father of her unborn child after she had drugged him into her bed. Desperate for access to the child when it was due to arrive, Roy agreed to pay Tracy £25,000 if she would marry him. Roy and Hayley went to the bank to get a loan for £10,000 for the first instalment. Matthew was only willing to lend them £5,000 but this was enough to appeal to Tracy's greed and the sham marriage went ahead.
