Mina Anwar was born 20th September, 1969 in Church, near Accrington in Lancashire. She was educated at the local sports college and gained an A-level in Theatre in Performance at Accrington and Rossendale College in 1988. She is a trained mezzo-soprano.

She first came to the public attention in 1995 when she played the regular role of P.C. Habib in The Thin Blue Line and appeared in series such as Barbara, Casualty, Doctors and Shameless. More recently she has had a regular role in the Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures from 2008-2011. Mina also appeared in House of Anubis for three series' as housekeeper Trudy.

On Coronation Street she appeared as Ravinder Kalirai, the mother of Amber Kalirai, irregularly between November 2005 and May 2006.
