Mr Smedley was assigned by Nigel Ridley to take over the Rovers Return as relief manager when Alec and Bet Gilroy shut up shop and barricaded themselves inside the pub, protesting Newton & Ridley's plan to turn the Rovers into a theme pub. Smedley was refused admittance by the Gilroys was was told by Bet to "'op it".
