He also appeared in Crown Court, Nightingale's Boys, The Nearly Man, Performance and Foyle's War.
He began his career with the BBC in Manchester appearing, like Tony Warren on Children's Hour and later appeared in other radio productions in the Afternoon Theatre strand. In between, he was a teacher and then an actor/director at Manchester's Library Theatre Company. In 1978 he achieved the personal ambition of acting with the Royal Shakespeare Company and stayed with them for eighteen years. Other stage work includes The Woman in Black and St Joan in the West End and The Visit. He has appeared in various guest roles in The Archers.
