Blake worked briefly for a naval tailors after leaving school and sang in a rock band before joining the The Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama in 1966. During the next three years, he appeared on stage and as a television extra before his first major role in Hair in Holland and the West End. A run of musical theatre roles followed in the 1970s in shows such as Jesus Christ, Superstar and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and on television in Z Cars and The Brothers before his first major part as Andy Evol in the Maureen Lipman comedy Agony and a few years later in the starring part of Kirk St Moritz in John Sullivan's comedy Dear John.
Blake has worked constantly since becoming an actor dividing his time between the theatre and television in numerous roles.
