Philip Martin Brown was born 9th July, 1956 in Manchester and brought up in Barrow-in-Furness. He appeared in Coronation Street from March to April 2005 as DI Pinnock who investigated the murder of Tommy Harris; making a return to the programme in January 2015 as the Therapist helping Steve McDonald following his diagnosis of clinical depression.

He has built up a long list of credits since the 1970s and one of his first television roles with a regular part in the adaptation of R.F. Delderfield's A Horseman Riding By. Many further roles followed including appearances in Bull Week, Juliet Bravo, The Professionals, The Paradise Club, Minder, regular roles in Wing and a Prayer, City Central and Cutting It and since 2006 a starring role in Waterloo Road as teacher Grantly Budgen.

On the big screen he had a small part in the 1999 film Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp.
