Robert Dorning (born 13th May 1913 in St. Helens, died 20th February 1989 in Merton, London) appeared on Coronation Street in two roles: firstly between January and September 1965 as property landlord Edward Wormold; and he returned to the programme in November 1972 as Alderman Charlie Rogers.

He is also remembered for playing Wally Hunt, Leonard Swindley's boss in the second series of the Street Spin-off Pardon the Expression in 1966 and its sequel Turn out the Lights in 1967. He also made an appearance in a first season episode of Pardon... in the guest role of Lionel Denison.

An accomplished violinist and saxophonist, he played with many dance bands in Liverpool while still at drama school. His acting career began on the stage in 1930s musical comedies and after National Service in World War II, he was seen on-screen in several 1940s and 50s film roles.

His other television credits include Drake's Progress, Murder Bag, The Vise, Bootsie and Snudge, The Cheaters, Here's Harry, The Worker, Pride and Prejudice, Life with Cooper, Crown Court, Emmerdale Farm, Hogg's Back, The Melting Pot, Q6, The Bounder, Bergerac and Chelworth.

Further film parts include Live Now - Pay Later, Cul-de-sac, The Troublesome Double, The Black Windmill, Confessions of a Pop Performer, The Ups and Downs of a Handyman, Carry on Emmannuelle, Evil Under the Sun and Mona Lisa.

On stage, he appeared in productions of The Perfect Woman, The Clockwork House, She's Done It Again, The Great Waltz, Something's Afoot and The Importance.

Robert was married to actress Honor Shepherd and father of actresses Stacy and Kate Dorning.
