Robert Gwilym was born 2nd December 1956 in Neath, Glamorgan. He developed an interest in acting during his time at Wycliffe College in Gloucestershire and was trained at the East 15 School of Drama in Essex.

After an early role in The Professionals, he worked extensively for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Glasgow Citizen’s Theatre Company. After roles in the television min-series’ Mussolini and Escape from Sobibor, his television experience grew with parts in Soldier Soldier, Chef and Taggart but he remains best known for his four-year stint in Casualty as Max Gallagher, a part he played from 1998.

In Coronation Street he played the part of Jim McDonald’s army colleague Johnny Johnson in February 1996 (a part that had previously been played by Vincenzo Ricotta in February 1990).
