Ron White was an assistant at Jackson's Chip Shop on Victoria Street. He served Minnie Caldwell, wondering where Ena Sharples was, and was told that the two of them had had a difference of opinion (which, although she didn't tell Ron, was over Minnie liking newcomer Effie Spicer). Minnie told him that Ena's recent absence visiting Henry Foster had made her more independent, something that even Bobby had noticed. Besides, she continued, it was good to go out in Summer, as there was enough darkness in winter and in the grave. Ron made his away as quickly as he could from the melancholy conversation.
