He trained as at Scarborough repertory theatre and served in the Royal Navy in the Second World War. Afterwards he worked as both a stage manager and an actor but between 1947 and 1958 he changed occupation several times and was a lighthouse keeper, a miner, a fireman and a publican.
He began his television career at the start of the 1960s and his other credits include BBC Sunday-Night Play, The Avengers, The Plane Makers, No Hiding Place, No Hiding Place, The Baron, Sergeant Cork, The Wednesday Play , Out of the Unknown, Armchair Theatre , Timeslip, Z Cars, The Flaxton Boys, Doctor Who, Crossroads, Country Matters, The Onedin Line , Emmerdale Farm, Danger UXB, Worzel Gummidge, Minder and Just Good Friends.
Film roles include Work Is a 4-Letter Word and Anne of the Thousand Days.
