Sonia Rahman was an old friend of the Nazir family, who embarked on a seven-year affair with Sharif Nazir.
Sonia turned up on the Nazirs' doorstep in August 2016 while Sharif and his wife Yasmeen were holding 45th wedding anniversary celebrations. It transpired that Sonia's husband Tariq had thrown her out of their marital home, suspicious that she didn't love him any more. Despite Sharif ordering her to leave fearing that she would to reveal all, Yasmeen on the other hand, reassured her friend that she could stay with them for as long as she needed to. Sonia then promised Sharif she wouldn't say anything about their sordid history, and briefly lived at 15a Coronation Street.
The affair was eventually discovered in November after Yasmeen had overheard a confrontation between Sonia and Sharif because of Alya's contempt (as she herself knew about the affair). Yasmeen intended to have it out with the pair, but hoped to delay the matter until after grandson Zeedan and Rana Habeeb had held their engagement party, but was unable to hold her tongue any longer and revealed the sordid secret in front of the guests. Later that evening, Yasmeen kicked both Sharif and Alya out of the house.
A couple of days later Sharif sent a letter to Yasmeen telling her that he had left for Newcastle. Sonia continued hanging around the street, believing that she and Sharif would still end up together. An angry Zeedan accused her of being stupid and throwing away her marriage and cosy life for him. Later that night, Sonia tried to make amends with Yasmeen in the street, but was met with a slap across the face due to her betrayal.
