Stephen Bennett wrote 20 episodes of Coronation Street between January 1999 and June 2000 returning to the programme with another 36 episodes (one co-credited with Jonathan Harvey) between June 2006 and July 2008 making 56 in total. He also wrote the tie-in book The Cartwright Murders which expanded on the plotline of Fred Elliott's grandfather, Bernard Cartwright, who was revealed to have been an infamous murderer 100 years ago. The book was co-credited with fictional Weatherfield Gazette reporter Ken Barlow.

Stephen also also scripted episodes of Emmerdale, The Royal, Born and Bred and Where the Heart Is.
