The galleon

1962: Colin Appleby settles the bill while dining with Christine Hardman

The Galleon was a restaurant in the Peak District. The diner was a favourite of Colin Appleby's and in June 1962 he took Christine Hardman out for lunch there in a bid to impress the young woman. As she wasn't familiar with the menu, Christine allowed Colin to choose her meal for her. Colin's choice was prawn cocktail and fillet of soul bonne femme as starters and chicken maryland as the main course, and the same for himself, with a bottle of his favourite red wine to go with it.

Christine greatly enjoyed the meal and hung on Colin's every word as he boasted about how often he ate at the posh restaurant, including a tale about his director Patrick Sandyman proposing to his future wife at the very table they were sitting at. Indeed, two other young women inside the diner at the time recognised Colin - though he denied to Christine that they were former girlfriends.

The Galleon appeared in Episode 158 (18th June 1962). The restaurant was represented by a studio set.
