Tom Elliott (12th October 1937 - 30th July 2017) joined Coronation Street as a storyliner in October 1983 contributing 574 episodes in that role in eighteen stints until August 1989, and a five further times in the role from June 1992 to July 1994.

He also acted as the programme's story editor for 276 episodes in ten stints from August 1989 to October 1991.

He wrote his first episode for the programme in November 1990. By the time he'd retired from the writing team in June 1997 he had scripted 72 episodes. Two years later Tom returned to the Street to write two editions of the spin-off Coronation Street - After Hours.

Born in Gorton, Manchester, his first job was as an apprentice engineer, followed by two years national service and then a range of occupations including being a professional footballer. He began writing full-time in 1974 after several years of contributing fiction to men's magazines. In the early 1980s, four of his plays were performed on Radio 4. His first stage play, Ward Games was performed in 1982 and brought him to the attention of Granada Television. His 1983 play Feed, starring Roy Barraclough, went on a national tour and won the Manchester Evening News theatre award for best new play.

He also wrote for ITV shows Emmerdale Farm and Children`s Ward.
