Tommy Markham was a glazier who put in a new window at the Corner Shop after Steve and Andy McDonald kicked their football through it. The sealant was barely dry when a JCB at the building site opposite the street was commandeered by the twins and went out of control, smashing the new window. While putting in the second new window, Tommy was constantly cracking jokes, such as suggesting that Sally Webster had a hand in putting the window in to gawp at his assistant, and that Alf Roberts may want to rename the shop "Alf's natural disasters". He also offered to make himself comfy in the back when the job was done to be ready when the window went again, suggesting a herd of elephants as a possible cause this time.
