Ulster Television first went on the air on 31st October 1959 covering the province of Northern Ireland. Two consortia had bid for the ITV region although they were persuaded to join forces by the Independent Television Authority. The station carried Coronation Street from its very first episode in 1960 and, after beginning colour transmissions on 14th September 1970, started broadcasts of the programme the same day in that medium from Episode 1007 onwards although it was quickly affected by the ITV Colour Strike which began just two months later.

The station has retained its franchise to broadcast through the numerous reshuffles and continues to transmit Coronation Street to this day.
