The Windermere Rooms were the setting of a grand Boxing Day charity ball held in December 1971 in aid of the RNLI. On the committee organising the ball were Kitty Stonely of the Robin Hood pub and Mr and Mrs Thornley.
The large room was able to accommodate several hundred people as they danced to a large band on the stage with the Master of Ceremonies introducing "Ladies' Excuse-me's" and spot prizes as part of the evening.
